Broken ice

There was definitely a sense of acceptance as we walked in to the yard this morning.  More “good mornings” shouted across the basketball court, more smiles.  We brought some pavement chalk out and drew and played hopscotch together.  Common language.

Still, Poppy didn’t make it past kapati time again, so did ‘homeschooling’ for the rest of the day.  For the rest of us, the afternoon was filled with kite making, shared reading and advertising next week’s Mad Hair Day and disco.

We had a relief teacher today – Tuppy had a leaders’ conference in Umuwa.  And another day without AEWs.  But Matt and I managed pretty well, I thought – everyone made a kite.

Then, this afternoon, a momentous breakthrough.  Poppy and I were working away when “halloooo, halloooo“.  At the door were Danielle, Valmai and Shania come to play hide-and-seek with Poppy.  They ran around together showing off who could count the furthest.  Then they all went outside and played ‘Electric Piggy‘ (some mutation of piggy-in-the-middle).  As the afternoon shadows lengthened, the smiles and laughter were joyous.
